Yesterday there was an open house showcasing the refurbished old mansion on E. Hyde Rd. outside of the village of Yellow Springs proper. It's just around the bend from my place, and I've walked that road for years. Ever since the old owner died I've had thoughts about what a great facility that would make for our Heart of Joy Folkschool. A group of us went to the open house and had a great time envisioning how we'd use the mansion and outbuildings and grounds. The current property up for sale is 5.2 acres; but there's a 40-acre field adjoining it, and that would be perfect for the farm and garden school we want to have as part of the artisan/crafts/cultural history coursework of the Folkschool. The whole-living curriculum.
Now we need to find some way to finance the property. There must be grants available for visions like this! We can put on one terrific fundraiser and involve the community, of course - and there's the sense that we should do that, for sure. But we'll need some other monies, we're guessing.
Yesterday as my friends and I were finishing our third tour of the mansion and outbuildings, walking a lovely shaded path, a beautiful blue bird made an appearance on a stump. At first I thought it was an Eastern bluebird - but then I saw it had no red breast. It was an indigo bunting, much more rare. A blue bird. As I walked this morning in our village forest, Glen Helen, I was thinking that we should call the property "Blue Bird Hill." Our address would be "Heart of Joy Folkschool at Blue Bird Hill," or something like that. But then I thought, well, but that was an indigo bunting. Just then, a real Eastern bluebird appeared on the path before me. "Bluebird Hill" it is, then. Just right. A little later I was sitting on a bench meditating near the waterfall by the blue hole. A friend on a walk - another Folkschool person - plopped down next to me. We talked about the mansion, and I mentioned the Blue Bird Hill idea. She laughed. She told me she had just been thinking, earlier that morning, about the difference between the Eastern bluebird and the indigo bunting.
Blue Bird Hill it is, then. Heart of Joy Folkschool at Bluebird Hill.
