Dry
Taos, NM, December 1997
There is something
wrong here in my
room at The Adobe Wall.
The tall wall
heater glows orange
spews skin-shrinking heat
heat that makes
my tongue hold on
to what is left of the
moisture on the
roof of my mouth.
Hold on
hold on the way
a cactus
drives its roots
deep
into
the hot
soil.
